Police say no post mortem has been carried out at this stage to determine a cause of death, while the fire service say the cause of the fire is also not yet proven.
Firefighters from Plymstock, Plympton, Greenbank and Crownhill were called to the blaze and neighbours in the street spoke of thick black smoke which billowed out from the garage, engulfing the building and much of the street itself.
The road was closed from around 11.30pm until shortly after 3pm as fire crews and police carried out their investigations.
