IN the hot summer of 1976, the year of the drought, I moved to Stokeinteignhead with my mother. We instantly loved it here, the beaches, the seaside and the nice surrounding area.

We moved from South East London so it was a real contrast from the city life that we had been leading. I am a family man and all my family have grown up here, we now live in Teignmouth and I own Jackman's Toybox in Teign Street and I am a granddad.

When my children were young they attended the good local schools, first Stokeinteignhead primary school then Teign Community College, which at the time was a grammar school and is now an academy.

Over the years, we have enjoyed many great days out here appreciating what Teignmouth has to offer, the countryside, the beaches, the local outdoor swimming The Lido and Teignmouth Museum, which is a great major attraction, this has recently been revamped thanks to lottery money.

Since I have been here and for many years before, I have seen people from all walks of life accessing the area from all over the country to make good use of the local hotels and to enjoy holidays and days out on the beach and to appreciate the many local events, from music festivals to carnivals, St George's Day celebrations to the switch on of the Christmas Lights.

Working in a local shop I have met visitors from all over the world. Teignmouth is very cosmopolitan. Even when I have been abroad I have heard people mention our town. I remember being sat on a beach in Shamal Shake in Egypt and someone was talking about the area and my little shop.

Teignmouth is a beautiful place to live with caring and helpful people, councillors and traders alike and its easy going atmosphere and when the sun is shining. It is very charity-minded with many events being laid on for good local causes such as the Backbeach Festival run by the Rotary Club and the Boxing Day Dip in the sea.

In Victorian times, Teignmouth was considered the 'Jewel in the Crown' it was 'the English Riviera' and to me it still is.
