Jim nets fifth club title in a low-scoring finale
JIM Bray shot the lowest winning score for a number of years at Tiverton to claim his fifth club championship title on Saturday.
Bray posted two gross 72s to finish on 144 — two over par for the day and one ahead of his former Palairet Trophy partner Chris Audin. Bray, a cover teacher at Tiverton High School, scored 34 on the back nine both times, taking advantage of some fine recovery shots.
The three-handicapper birdied the seventh, 12th and 15th in the morning and the fifth, 10th and 13th in the afternoon, alleviating the damage caused by four three-putts on the front nine. Audin also opened up with a 72 but a triple bogey seven on the 10th in the second round looked to have ended his hopes, before he played the last six holes in three under par to come in with a 73. Rhys Cruse was in contention after an opening 74 before a 75 in the afternoon left him on 149 and in third place. Lloyd Sampson had rounds of 76 and 77 to come fourth and also cruise to victory in the President's Cup, for the best nett total. Spectacular scores of 64 and 65 left the 12-handicapper on 129 and his 13-under total was five better than Mark Butt, who posted a 68 and a 66. Bray (138) came third with two 69s and Colin Taylor (139) was fourth after a 68 and a 71. Other good nett scores came from Mike Jewell (66), Phil Moulding (66), Lee Davey (68) and Daniel Perry (68) in the morning and Harry Konig (66), Ricky Cruse (68), Steve Garland (68) and Greg Birchmore (68) in the afternoon.
Tony Harrowell had his handicap cut from 25 to 22 after winning the veterans' Summer Trophy in glorious weather last Tuesday. Harrowell posted a nett 65 to finish two ahead of Trevor Parker, who was cut from 15 to 13.
The ladies' President's Trophy II team lost 5-2 at home to Saunton in their last match of the season on Friday. Maureen Postles and Annette Cardwell won for the home side.
Tiverton's ladies lost 5½-1½ at Libbaton in the Sheelah Creasy Bowl. Making up the Tiverton team were Linda Knowles, Shirley Ward, Joan Reed, Gail Stuckey, Anto Hajduk, Kathryn Hall and Kay Leach.
Tiverton vice-captain Tony Allsopp faces a selection dilemma ahead of Tiverton's Palairet Trophy third round match against Saunton Artisans at RND on Sunday. Chris Audin (2) is playing in a tournament in Nottinghamshire and may not return in time, Peter Boax (9), who played with youngster Ben Hearn (8) in the 5-0 defeat of Budleigh Town at Teign Valley, is unavailable. His absence could open the door for two players with bags of experience at RND — Allsopp himself (6) and in-form Mike Jewell (8). The first four pairs are likely to be unchanged, provided Audin is available. Jim Bray (3) and Simon Waddington (3) and are set to go out first, with Audin and Rhys Cruse (4) off second, Ollie Taylor (5) and Matt Woodgate (6) third and Bob Tye (6) and Martin Selby (6) fourth.
Ray Cavill survived a scare on the last hole to win the Terry Martin Joinery event at Padbrook Park with a 40-point stableford score. Cavill set up the win with birdies on the 7th and 14th holes. But he feared he may have blown his chance with a double bogey on the 18th.
In the end, he had a two point cushion over Chris Manley. Back-to-back double bogeys on 15 and 16 ruined his chances.
Peter Jones continued his fine run of form to win the Fuller's Pride EGU Gold at Padbrook Park with a nett seven under par 65. Jones slipped to three over after five holes but a run of one under par through the next nine holes got his round back on track. Jones finished two shots ahead of Ollie Justice with Keith Radbourne a further shot back.

In a Dartmoor League scratch championship at Crediton last week, the home club's captain David Slee fired the round of the day, a gross 74, to lead teammates Devon Greenslade and Nick Bunn to victory, completing a Dartmoor League double, as the club are the league champions as well. Crediton's latest league game resulted in a 4.5 to 1.5 victory at Teign Valley.
