Jimmy Mullen named in Devon squad for Golf County Finals
Devon first team skipper Adam Bridgewater has selected his team for this week’s England Golf Men’s County Finals at Minchinhampton.
Royal North Devon’s England international and Open Championship amateur ace Jimmy Mullen is included in Devon’s magnificent seven for the three-day tournament in Gloucestershire, which tees off on Friday.
The highly-rated 19-year-old played all four rounds of the Open Championship at Muirfield and finished joint third in the Brabazon Trophy at Formby, achieving a hole-in-one during the final round.
The Devon team also includes Bigbury’s former England under-16 international Bigbury’s Sam Edwards, fourth-placed finisher in this summer’s prestigious Tillman Trophy.

David Ashley (Saunton) David Blick (East Devon) Peter Lawrence (Woodbury Park) Dan Rosevear and player-captain Bridgewater (Tavistock) make up the Devon seven.
Devon are through to the finals after winning June’s qualifying tournament at South West Counties Championship week at Dudsbury in Dorset. Bridgewater’s team pipped English county champions Wiltshire – winners in 2012 and 2011 – to the top regional qualifying spot.
The Devon team will go to Gloucestershire buoyed by 10½-4½ Channel League wins at Wiltshire and Gwent, which lifted them to the top of the table. Devon are defending regional Channel League champions. They are also the first ever county to have won through to the boys’, men’s and seniors’ county finals in the same year.
Proud county golf secretary John Hirst said: “To get to three county finals in the same year is quite an achievement.
“This represents sterling work by all the team managers to get their sides to such a pitch. Getting to three finals also represents a huge effort that goes on behind the scenes with volunteers.”
Devon men won the county championships in 2003 at Formby and were finalists again the following year, at Worksop.
The County Finals are played on a round robin basis over the three days. In the first round of matches, Lancashire face Leicestershire & Rutland while Devon meet Hampshire, Isle of Wight & Chanel Islands. Lancashire will be making their fourth successive appearance and seeking their 11th English County title.
The North Region champions won the title in 2008 and 2010, were runners-up last year and finished third in 2011.
The Lancashire line-up includes county champion and England boys’ international Haydn McCullen and players who have appeared in previous finals, namely John Carroll, Paul Howard, Sean Towndrow and Mark Young.
Like Devon’s Mullen, Howard was capped by England in the recent Home Internationals at Ganton.
