A CHARITY supporting people with learning disabilities throughout Devon is celebrating its 25th year.

Havencare, which provides a residential service in Preston was founded after the move to bring people with learning disabilities into the community.

Governed by a board of non-executive trustees, the organisation began by opening residential care homes in Devon, working in partnership with local health authorities. The aim was to support people who had only ever known long term institutional care.

Havencare has since developed a proven reputation for supporting for people who have complex needs and autistic spectrum disorder.

Support is provided in a range of environments including social housing, private accommodation and small residential services. The emphasis is on the personal choices of the individual, and every support package is bespoke.

Janet Pounsberry, Havencare's chief executive, said: "Celebrating this milestone is a proud moment for all of us.

"But what means even more is the good news stories of people who have moved on and who now live in their own homes, with support, enjoying the everyday life that all of us take for granted, but which must have seemed so out of reach."

Havencare continues to develop provision and is looking to take on more staff to work in its support services, training initiatives and new opportunities for service users, staff and volunteers.

Engaged with initiatives both locally and regionally, the charity is co-hosting a number of conferences this year and plans to open a new specialist support facility for people who have very complex needs.

Last year, Havencare became the largest organisation in the South West to have successfully achieved the PQASSO (Practical Quality Assurance System for Small Organisations) Quality Mark at Level 2, endorsed by the Charity Commission.
