OWNER and chairman James Brent has highlighted the 'passion to succeed' of John Sheridan as one of the main reasons why he was appointed as Plymouth Argyle's new manager.

Sheridan, 48 (pictured right), has signed a contract with the relegation-threatened Pilgrims until the end of the season.

However, there is the prospect of a longer-term deal on the table for Sheridan should he lead them to Football League safety.

Brent was also struck by Sheridan's 'lack of tolerance for mediocrity' when the former Oldham Athletic and Chesterfield manager was interviewed by Argyle officials last Friday.

Sheridan takes charge of the Pilgrims for the first time on Saturday when Morecambe are the visitors to Home Park.

Brent told Herald Sport: "There were several things that made his CV shine out.

"John has got a lot of experience in Leagues One and Two, and has got winning experience. He has collected silverware and has done it on sensible budgets.

"It hasn't been a chairman who has been buying success. He has built teams at a reasonable cost.

"In the interviewing process, he was a very direct speaker. He was thoughtful and had a confidence in what he said, but without being arrogant.

"He has a passion to succeed and doesn't like to fail," continued Argyle's owner and chairman.

"I think he gave all of us confidence that he knew what he needed to do to get the club back up the league table and he would execute that with great efficiency.

"Stylistically, he comes across as a person who will coax players that need support and will be fairly clear in his views on people who need other encouragement.

"I think that balance of support for young people and yet lack of tolerance for mediocrity is exactly what we need."

Sheridan was offered the chance to become Argyle manager on Friday, not much more than 72 hours after his predecessor, Carl Fletcher, had been sacked.

He watched the Pilgrims play at Port Vale the next afternoon, when they were beaten 4-0, and his appointment was confirmed on Sunday night.

Brent was pleased the process had been completed so swiftly and, at the same time, convinced Sheridan was the correct choice.

He said: "There is clearly risk in taking decisions quickly, but when it feels right you stop looking.

"John ticked all the boxes for us. It was unanimous. There was no dissent from the decision.

"From the very short period we have seen him, he has already made quite a difference around the club, so it's good."

Fletcher led Argyle to Football League survival last term, after replacing Peter Reid early in the campaign.

Now Brent is hoping Sheridan can steer the Pilgrims to safety in the remaining 19 games this season.

Brent said: "It's critical we stay up. That's where the focus. We are clearly going to back John in bringing in some new players.

"All of the feedback, not just from John but from all of the other folk we spoke to who had watched Argyle play, was that there is a lot of individual talent in the team.

"It was felt we shouldn't be where we are in the league table if you look at that individual talent.

"Hopefully, the combination of John bringing a new broom to the club and some additional players will see a material change in results."

“He may be passionate now, but what happens when this DOF arrives to undermine everything he is trying to do? Or has the DOF ludicrousy been shelved?”

“If honesty and transparency was order of the day then Brent would have said John Sheridan was a cheap option, available now on a short term contract. Just because he appeared to impress and tick all the boxes of cheapness at the interview does not mean to say he was the correct choice. I believe there were better options of a managers applying for the job but anyone would have been better than Carl Fletcher.

That said John Sheridan has had mediocre success at this low level, so there is some hope. Argyle fans should now get behind him and what team he builds and hope he saves our football league status. Up to now he has impressed me with his media interviews and the fact he has promoted Gary Owers, it obvious Romain Larrieu and Kevin Nancekivell were not really up to job.

A piece of advice to Mr Brent stops treating Argyle fans like fools the majority respond to honesty and transparency.
Personally I have severe reservations about him still and his motive. A friend of mine who is a retired successful property developer thinks that Brent may have still development plans for Home Park which would not compliment the football club and will wait patiently for that opportunity.”

“Quote John Sheridan on talk sport this morning :

"Nobody wants to come here, I didn't realise how difficult it would be to get new players to come down here"

Put yourself in any footballers boots and ask yourself would you want to play in a 3 sided ground for the team at the bottom of the football league with a chairman that knows nothing about football.

Silk purse and sows ear springs to mind JS.

    Down you go.”

“I hope Sheridan has done enough in his first week with us to make a difference against Morecambe. It will be interesting to see his starting line-up. Let's see a good crowd at Home Park, cheering on the Greens. ATID!!”

“Well! well! well, haven't the fans been saying the same for most of the season, we have the talent at the club and it is a case of utilising those resources to the best effect. Carl Fletcher tried his best and did a good job of saving us the first time around, but that was done on the crest of a wave and John Deehan behind him.

The appointment of John Sheridan looks sound and should be right for "The Argyle", we need to re-access, stablise and overcome our current demise, JS seems suited to that role.

Don't suppose CF will read the fans comments, but if you do read this Carl, yes go back to playing but more importantly try for an assistant manager's position, learn the trade and one day I think you can make it as a manager; "Good luck".”

“But we like 'pickering' Geoff !!

Can't beat a bit of pash... no tongues though !!

"Stylistically, he comes across as a person who will coax players that need support and will be fairly clear in his views on people who need other encouragement..... That'll be a swift kick up the backside for some of them then...”
