HERALD readers are being urged to get their nominations in for their local healthcare hero as soon as possible.

There are just four days left to nominate a local health worker who you believe deserves recognition as part of Derriford Hospital's annual awards ceremony.

After the successful Star Awards last year, Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs Derriford, has this year launched its Celebration Awards to recognise the achievements of its staff.

If you have been cared for by someone really special at Derriford Hospital, the Royal Eye Infirmary, the Child Development Centre, or a community midwife, the Trust wants you to nominate them for an award.

The Trust is running the awards scheme to acknowledge the efforts of those staff who go the extra mile for patients, their families and their colleagues.

And as part of the scheme the Trust has devised The Herald Readers Choice award to recognise an individual or team who, as judged by their patients, have delivered excellent care and an excellent service.

Ann James, chief executive of Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, said: "Every day our staff do an amazing job, caring for patients or working in roles to support those who care for patients.

"We are running our Celebration Awards 2013 to recognise some of the many staff who are really special. You, our patients and families, can help us. Has one of our staff or a team of staff been outstanding and made a real difference to you?

"Would you like to make them feel special by nominating them for an award? If you have had great care and want to thank one of our staff, why not nominate them for a Herald Readers' Choice Award."

Other categories are Leader of the year, Clinical Team of the Year, Non-clinical Team of the Year, Unsung Hero,Volunteer of the Year, Role Model Living the Values, and Excellence in Innovation and Research.

Nominations in all eight categories are being welcomed from members of staff, service users, family, carers or members of the public.

Hein Scheffer, HR director at the hospital, said: "The Celebration Awards are a continuation of the Star Awards launched last year to give patients and visitors a chance to nominate a member of staff or team who have made a difference to them either at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth Dialysis Unit, the Royal Eye Infirmary, the Child Development Centre or community visits.

"We want to take this opportunity to celebrate their achievements with the local community and give them the recognition they deserve."

The deadline for nominations is Monday, March 18. To make a nomination visit www.thisisplymouth.co.uk/carestar to print off a form, or www.plymouthhospitals. nhs.uk/celebration where you can nominate online or print off a form to fill in by hand. Forms should then be sent to Celebration Awards, Workforce Development, Building 4, Derriford Business Park, Plymouth, PL6 5QZ, or emailed to plh-tr.WODadminteam@nhs.net.
