A 63-YEAR-OLD kite surfer was airlifted to hospital on Wednesday afternoon after he hit rocks at Saunton Sands.

Croyde Coastguard, a search and rescue helicopter from RMB Chivenor and police attended the scene at 3.30pm

The man, from Essex, was walking away from the beach when the search and rescue crew stopped him and flew him to North Devon District Hospital.

Sergeant Rob Wilcocks said: "The police had several calls from members of the public who had seen the kite surfer crash into the rocks at the west end of the beach, but he was fine, he just had some cuts and bruises."

"Don't go alone and always wear a personal floatation device. Wear bright clothing which will help you be located if you get into difficulty."
