MANAGER Carl Fletcher praised the performance of winger Joe Lennox after Plymouth Argyle beat Aldershot Town 2-1 in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at Home Park last night.

Lennox provided assists for both of the Pilgrims' goals, scored by Paris Cowan-Hall and Andres Gurrieri in the second round tie.

The draw for the southern section quarter-finals will take place on Saturday, with the ties to be played on the week commencing December 3.

Argyle took the lead against Aldershot after only 33 seconds as Cowan-Hall converted a cross from Lennox.

Then, after the visitors had equalised, Gurrieri fired home after more positive attacking play from Lennox.

The 20-year-old was making only his second start of the season for the Pilgrims.

Fletcher said: "I think you saw what Joe can do if you can get him on the ball. Obviously, he tired a little bit in the second half.

"We got him the ball four times in the first half and scored twice from it.

"I was pleased for Joe, and I was pleased Paris got his goal because of the hard work he has put in."

Argyle were without 11 players for the JPT tie because of injuries, suspension and international duty.

That meant chances for goalkeeper Rene Gilmartin, left-back Scott Griffiths and central defender Jamie Richards to make their debuts.

Griffiths had only completed his one-month loan move from Championship club Peterborough United at 9.30am yesterday morning.

He then drove to Plymouth and met up with his new team-mates shortly before their pre-match meeting at 5.30pm.

Only 90 minutes later, Griffiths was getting his first run-out for the Pilgrims.

Fletcher snapped up the 26-year-old defender because of a stomach muscle injury to Robbie Williams, while Onismor Bhasera is on international duty with Zimbabwe.

"He has not played loads of games but came in and did well," said the Pilgrims' boss.

"He had been in the car pretty much all of the day and was just enthusiastic to get down here and play. I'm really pleased we have got him down here.

"We have been trying (to get a loan signing in) for two days," continued Fletcher.

"We had a few fall through.

"We got it done about half-past nine (yesterday morning). He was in the car and straight down here.

"Willo (Williams) was really struggling with his injury on Saturday (in the 2-1 home defeat by AFC Wimbledon) and with Baz (Bhasera) being away it was important we got Scott in.

"It gives Willo that time to recover and we don't have to rush him back before he's properly healed up."

Fletcher revealed Cowan-Hall had been substituted at half-time because of a tight hamstring.

The Argyle manager was also confident deals to extend the loans of Guy Madjo and Alex MacDonald would soon be finalised.
