A TINY plot of land near Meadfoot in Torquay has sold at auction for more than three times the guide price.

The 0.16 acre plot of land on the edge of the sea is in front of the prestigious Kilmorie tower block of flats off Ilsham Marine Drive. The guide price was £2,500 but it sold after fierce bidding for £9,000 at an auction in Cornwall.

At the same auction a larger 2.2 acre plot of land at Maidencombe sold for vastly more than expected. The field with magnificent sea views off Teignmouth Road was valued at between £5,000 and £15,000 by auctioneers, but was eventually knocked down at £46,000.

Located between Torquay and Teignmouth, the field boasts beautiful rural views and coastal vistas looking out to Babbacombe Bay and there was fierce bidding in the saleroom, said Graham Barton, auctioneer and regular on the BBC's Homes Under The Hammer programme.

He said both plots attracted interest from speculators and those who wanted them for amenity or hobby purposes.

He added: "These plots are in superb locations, with magnificent views and I wasn't totally surprised there was so much interest from so many people with a bewildering array of ideas and plans."

They were among 18 lots listed for sale by Clive Emson, the regional land and property auctioneers.

The sale took place at St Mellion in Saltash.

“This is very local to me. I can't help worrying about what the buyer(s) might have in mind.

Oh to be a millionaire, with money to spare. I'd have bought it just to ensure it is left unspoilt.”
