Landscape II, a play set in Croyde, is performed by Melanie Wilson at West Buckland School
AHAUNTING, thoughtful play set in the depths of the countryside around Croyde, is the intriguing entertainment offered by Beaford Arts on Saturday.
Landscape II focuses on three women, separated by a hundred years, who start a conversation across time.
It is written and performed by Melanie Wilson.
"The story of it was something that came to me while spending time in the location of North Devon," she said. "I was prompted to include the experience of the third character, an Afghan woman, by news events at the time I was writing the piece."

The landscape of the region forms the main backdrop to the piece and provides comfort and inspiration to the characters. Their parallel experiences reveal shared imaginings of identity and escape, as menacing undercurrents steal into their solitary and reflective lives.
Their letters, diaries, drawings and photographs expose a series of unsettling episodes and occurrences.
As the landscape presses in on them, they draw upon the threads that connect them to survive.
Although Melanie is based in London, she spends a lot of time working and writing in Darracott, near Croyde. Landscape II was inspired by her love of and connection with the local countryside. The show uses beautiful images and film footage shot on location in North Devon.
To help reflect the landscape and local people from the late 1800s, Melanie has drawn on images from The Beaford Old Archive. The photos, from 1870 to 1940, were collected by the late photographer James Ravilious.
"The work explores the significance of female inheritance between children, mothers and grandmothers," said Melanie.
"It is about the power of solitude on women's identity, and how landscape shapes our place in the world for good and bad.
"It is about freedom, resilience and bravery."
Landscape II, performed by Melanie Wilson and staged by Fuel theatre company, is a Beaford Arts event at West Buckland School on Saturday, October 5, 7.30pm.
