Late scores are costly as boot of Day dashes Saltash hopes
Satlash...26 Roseland...28
SALTASH picked up two points despite suffering a narrow defeat to last season's Cornwall League champions Roseland at Moorlands Lane.
The Ashes picked up a bonus point for finishing within seven points and another for scoring four tries.
But the home side really wanted a full five points from this game.
However, Roseland proved a sterner test than was first thought and soon went into an 8-0 lead.
A try by wing Kieran Hurrell, converted by Nicky Blake, reduced the gap to 8-7.
Saltash went into the lead when debutant flanker Kieran Arndell went over in the corner to make it 12-8.
The visitors cut the gap to one point before half-time with a penalty and then went in front after the break with another kick.
But Saltash came back with a try from veteran fly-half Simon Watson, which Blake converted.
Roseland's Ben Hawke and Ashes' Hillman both traded tries to leave the score at 26-21 to Saltash.
But five minutes from time, Roseland broke Saltash's hearts with a try by Simon Bailey from a catch-and-drive move, which was converted by Day to snatch victory for the visitors.
Teignmouth...3 Liskeard-Looe...7
A SECOND half try by full-back Andy Sheer, which was converted by James Noel-Johnson, was enough for Liskeard-Looe to claim a deserved victory at Teignmouth.
The home side had gone in at the break 3-0 up with a penalty from Callum Couch.
But Sheer's try came 10 minutes after the interval and was made by number eight Ali Hill.
Liskeard then had to play for a spell with 13 men after, first Dan Goodman and then James Collins were sin-binned, but they were able to hold out for a good win.
Liskeard's seconds beat St Columba & Torpoint 17-15.
LOCKIE CUP FIRST ROUND
Tamar Saracens...20 Plymstock Albion Oaks...24
RELEGATED Oaks warmed up for their Devon One campaign by winning their first competitive match in more than a season.
Oaks, who start their Devon One season on Saturday against Plymouth Barbarians, failed to win a single match in the Cornwall/Devon League last season and were knocked out of the Lockie Cup at the first attempt.
On Saturday, they bet on some of their colts winning their first serious match of the new campaign on the road and won handsomely. Colts Ben Hockey and Tom West both featured in Oaks' hard-fought win. Hockey scored one of their two tries – Adam Soper got the other – and West kicked their remaining points.
Director of rugby Mark Watson said afterwards: "We gave away some points through ill-discipline, but I thought overall we deserved to win.
"I told the lads that we are going to meet Saracens twice more this season and this result was a good yard-stick of how far we have come and where we are now.
"We've got some of our colts in the team and they've done well. We haven't won for over a season, so I am delighted and I hope it's the first of many more."
Saltash II...10 DHSOB...12
FOUR penalties from Alex Buckley were enough to give DHSOB a morale-boosting win over a powerful – and ultimately unlucky — Saltash team.
Old Boys' director of rugby Mike Freeman said: "Saltash were a strong side, so give credit to our guys, four of whom were making their debuts. It was a tremendous match and Saltash were leading 10-6 at one point.
"Alex (Buckley) put us in front with a couple of penalties and then, frankly, it was all Saltash. They missed a penalty with the last kick of the match, although admittedly it was from a long way out and I wouldn't have been too disappointed if we had come away with a 13-12 loss because our players, who are still very young, had done so well.
"However, we managed to hold out and we'll go into our first Devon Two league game with Buckfastleigh with a bit more confidence."
