Learning can be fun
THERE is an old saying that learning is wasted on the young but whether we believe that or not it is true to say that learning as an adult can be tremendous fun.
It's always a good idea to learn new skills, challenge ourselves and give the brain and body some exercise but shouldn't we also take every opportunity to make new friends, find common interests and enjoy ourselves in the process?
If you were to ask our Singing for Health and Happiness students from Brixham, Torquay and Paignton that question you would get a very positive answer.
Just before Christmas, tutor Claire Waring brought all of her four classes together to share and celebrate their achievements of the term in an end of term singing extravaganza.

It proved a hugely successful and immensely enjoyable afternoon for the gathered students and their friends and family, who were invited along.
This was a first for Adult and Community Learning (ACL) but will certainly not be the last as students thoroughly enjoyed meeting each other and sharing what they had been learning, singing a number of songs and rounds and finishing with some lovely Christmas carols that everyone joined in with.
Not everyone wants to sing, of course, and many people tell us that we really wouldn't want them to hear them try, but there is a very wide choice of courses and workshops available with subjects that range from archaeology to woodcarving, from guitar to yoga, costing less than many would spend on a meal out, and all lasting a lot longer than it would take to eat one!
The New Year message from South Devon College's ACL department is why not leave the day time chores or the tempting comforts of the winter evening sofa to learn something new?
There is so much on offer in Paignton, Brixham and Torquay to help you feel positive and motivated as we move into 2013.
As one of our students told us recently: "There is so much to do here in ACL that no one in Torbay can have an excuse to be bored."
