TORQUAY Tennis Club junior Rebecca Ley won two out of three singles finals in three different age groups at the Heron Centre in Newquay last week.

Players from all over England congregated at Newquay for the Heron club's ninth annual tournament.

And the 14-year-old pupil of Churston Ferrers Grammar School (pictured above) made her way to the finals with little resistance.

The semi-finals saw her defeat Olivia Berry of Surrey 6-0, 6-0 in the U14s; Chloe Broom (Kent) 6-0, 6-1 in the U16s and Ellie Stevens from Suffolk in the U18s.

On finals day, Ley saw her U14 final end in defeat 6-4, 6-4 to Ellie Knox, the number one seed from Kent.

But Rebecca did defeat Lara Graney 6-3, 7-6 in the U18s and then added the U16 title with a comprehensive win over India Rojano from Cornwall 6-2, 6-1.

Ley's coach Steve Maslen paid tribute to her week's work.

"The quality and consistency of Becky's play during the week was outstanding. She did not drop more than five games to any opponent in getting to her three finals," Maslen said.

"To play three finals in a day is mentally and physically demanding so to go on and win two titles after losing the first one was a tremendous performance."
