THE losing Liberal Democrat candidate in last year's Police Commissioner election will try for a seat on Devon County Council in May.

Brian Blake is one of three Lib Dem candidates for county council seats in South West Devon. He will contest Yealmpton.

The party has also put up Sue Bridgwater as its candidate for Wembury-Bickleigh and Jon May for the Ivybridge contest.

Constituency chair Mark Lawrence said: "The voters have three top Lib Dem candidates to vote for. They will all make excellent county councillors. The local party had to make a choice about who to select and I am pleased that we have gone for three excellent people from a high quality field."

Keith Baldry, the constituency vice chair and South Hams district councillor for Yealmpton, said: "Across the country Lib Dems are winning in local by elections as well as in the Eastleigh parliamentary election. I will not be at all surprised to see us winning in South West Devon."

Meanwhile, Cornish Lib Dems will launch their election campaign today. Councillors and candidates will be joined by Liberal Democrat party president Tim Farron.

Group Leader Jeremy Rowe will outline the Liberal Democrat campaign themes.

The next county council elections in Devon and Cornwall are due to take place on May 2. The last date to apply to be on the electoral register or to apply for a postal vote is 5pm on Wednesday April 17.

The deadline to apply for a proxy vote is 5pm on Wednesday April 24.
