Lizzy's Larder

Lizzy's Larder has been celebrating 10 years of trading this month and the celebrations will culminate with a Coffee morning this Friday 28th September to raise money for Macmillan cancer support as part of the worlds biggest coffee morning. Lizzy and her mother in law Jen will be serving free teas, coffees and homemade cakes at Blackberry Farm, Milton Damerel between 10 am and 12 noon and all donations will go directly to Macmillan. In addition Lizzy has promised to donate a further10% of all money taken in the shop at Lizzy's Larder that day. There will be free farm tours and lots of animals to visit too.

In September 2002 Mike and Lizzy Kirby swept out their larder and opened their farm shop to the public. Originally open on a Saturday selling lamb, veg and homemade cakes it quickly grew and now their award winning farm shop sells a huge array of homemade goodies as well as local crafts and gifts.

"The last 12 months has seen the biggest change" says Lizzy. "We have expanded our free farm tours and walks and are now serving lunches and teas."

It has also been an amazing year for the family, Lizzy won Top local producer, Best specialist retailer in the North Devon food awards where she met Michael Caines who she describes as truly inspirational. She was also a regional finalist in the Countryside Alliance award. Mike has also been extremely successful showing his award winning Aberdeen Angus beef which is very popular both in the shop and on the tours.

Lizzy said "The last 10 years have flown by. We have met some amazing people and have made some really good friends doing a job we both enjoy. We are really lucky to have such fantastic support".

Their 10 year celebration was recently topped off by a visit from Jun Tunaka and Galton Blackiston who were filming for a new BBC television series to be shown in the spring. "It was really exciting" said Lizzy "Having two celebrity chefs cooking with you in your own kitchen was amazing".

Their children Brandon, David and Kaya are also showing a keen interest in the farm shop and in fact one of the recipes cooked with Jun and Galton was inspired by them.

You can now visit Lizzy's Larder at Holsworthy market every Wednesday so why not treat yourself to a homemade pasty, pie or sausage roll and follow it up with piece of scrummy cake or a devon cream tea.

You can contact Lizzy on 01409 261440 for more information.
