OVER a third of people aged 65 and above in the South West feel lonely, according to new research.

Age UK, a leading charity for older people, and pioneering online young people's charity YouthNet have come together to tackle loneliness and isolation across generations.

The charities are calling on runners to take part in the next Virgin London Marathon in April to raise money for an innovative new service which will see 700 young volunteers help 10,000 isolated older people to get online.

As official charities for the 2013 Virgin London Marathon, Age UK and YouthNet have 350 guaranteed places and are looking for people with their own place in the race to also join the team.

“PEople of all ages are becoming can be isolated due to the modern society problems. I'm afraid that is part of life for people of all ages. THe way our world is unfortunately means many people will be isolated. this applies to people of any age. CHIldren are not given any choice in their routes in life and are forced into institution style school environments and alot of their early years are wasted on things that do not teach them anything or of any real value. some of it has value but some of it is just wasting their valuable years away they should be spending with their families”

“I think this is a good opportunity to bring up something about Marlborough House, where the majority of people are either aged, or suffer from ill health .
The thing that stops the elderly or sick people mixing in the flats, is the fact that the housing Authority's keep putting younger ,troublesome, people in amongst the elderly and sick.
There should be an age limit at the house for 50 plus, say.
People are afraid to leave their flats because of the trouble makers they keep putting in .
It's Ok for the authority's they don't have to live there.”
