A FEMALE war medic who was awarded the Military Cross has been honoured again after a man whose life she saved named his daughter after her.

Young naval medic Kate Nesbitt – only the second woman in the history of the armed services to be awarded the MC for exemplary gallantry in the face of the enemy – yesterday joined Lance Corporal John List at a civic ceremony in Plymouth to honour her bravery in Afghanistan almost exactly a year ago.

At the ceremony Able Seaman Nesbitt also met L Cpl List's four-week-old daughter Madison, who has been given the middle name Kate.

The event was staged just a day before the anniversary of the Taliban ambush, which happened near Lashkar Gah in southern Afghanistan.

L Cpl List was shot in the face, the bullet rupturing his jaw and emerging through his neck.

The 23-year-old from North Devon said he would have died there had it not been for the efforts of Able Seaman Nesbitt, who was attached to his unit as its medic.

Able Seaman Nesbitt, from Whitleigh in Plymouth, braved Taliban gunfire while running 70 metres across open ground to treat the badly wounded soldier.

For her efforts, the former Sir John Hunt Community College student was last year awarded the Military Cross.

During the civic reception L Cpl List and his fiancée Emma said they were forever indebted to Able Seaman Nesbitt.

"As soon as we found out Emma was pregnant with a girl we knew we had to name her after Kate," he said.

"It's the very least we could do to thank Kate. I wouldn't be here today if it weren't for her."

Emma, aged 20, added: "What Kate did was amazing. If it wasn't for her neither John or our little Maddie would be here now."

Able Seaman Nesbitt, 21, said she was delighted to learn Madison had been named after her: "It's overwhelming. I really would not have guessed that in a million years. It's just fantastic."
