Plymouth MP Oliver Colvile defends all-expenses-paid trip to Saudi Arabia
Last year David Cameron, the Prime Minister, was criticised by human rights campaigners for selling arms to countries like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Mr Colvile, the Tory MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport, went to Saudi Arabia as part of a UK Defence Forum delegation.

He said he travelled with fellow Conservative MPs Jack Lopresti and Tobias Ellwood and a Liberal Democrat peer, Baroness Falkner of Margravine.
"We were there to try to promote defence exports," Mr Colvile told The Herald.
"As a naval town this is something that is very important for Plymouth."
Mr Colvile said he also had the opportunity to talk to the Saudi foreign minister about developments in the Middle East.
"I was keen to have a better understanding of the regional politics and the impact on our Armed Forces."
Mr Colvile said he also spoke to the Saudis about their plans to send medical students to train in Britain.
With the Government reviewing the number of UK medical students, he was "keen to make sure that Plymouth University's medical school is not damaged".
"If Saudi students come here that will help to make our medical school viable and sustainable," he said.
Mr Colvile said the Saudis were offering to pay for their students to work in the NHS as part of their training and he had passed on that information to the Health Secretary.

“Funny, but according to UK Defence Forum's website, it's a "non-partisan" organisation whose aim is "to inform the defence, security and peace debate". Trying to sell weapons doesn't seem to meet either of those criteria. And we need some explanation of how, exactly, that would be so "very important to Plymouth".
I notice Mr Colvile has nothing to say about the ongoing investigation into the ongoing Serious Fraud Office investigation into the Saudi dealings of GPT Special Projects, a subsidiary of EADS which (According to Private Eye) has donated to UK Defence Forum. Nor does he seem to think that Saudi Arabia's record of funding terrorism and the international spread of fundamentalist Wahhibism through faith schools, nor the repression of its own people, are worthy of comment.
Still, at least the Herald prised some sort of response out of him, lame as it is. That's more than this constituent has received!”

“There's an old cliché in the arms trade which roughly summates as "it doesn't pay to be too picky who or whom your customers are in the arms trade as then they usually just end-up buying from one of your competitors, or in this case, countries, and then you may find you haven't a leg to stand on as they have been sold a land-mine which doesn't conform to the Geneva convention". Middle Eastern, and largely world, foreign policy in the 1980's and in a post-Falklands era was based upon the premise of how NATO could avoid the situation where a developing country amassed wealth to such an extent that it could build a land-based army which was superior in number to any Western standing army given transportation and logistics – whilst effectively maintaining suppression over its own population via a heavily-armed personal guard which diverted both home-grown wealth and foreign aid into personal and paramilitary enarmourment whilst leaving the general population in another universe under conditions of poverty (food, education). With regards to the Middle East - at the time composed of a number of independent 'states' which had little business interests amongst themselves and were largely flourishing under an active export market - it was perhaps decided that any warring 'state' would be cracked-down upon severely and then any 'states' which agreed business was better in an economic environment that wasn't subject to the market fluctuations caused by conflict were supported via foreign trade. It is no surprise that the British Government profits hugely from its time honoured traditional of weapons technological advancement, yet in a modern world fighter jets are as much of a status symbol as a private helicopter, and yet again some may discern a countries army can become an oppression to the populous if democracy and economic development do not occur in symbiosis and metal is bought instead of food. As part of the original NATO plan for global attainment it would be considered that after a period of international monetary instability the world would look to the West as a model of democratic Government rather than historically in a dictator's re-enactment of war drawn from another bygone era. In summation, Grand Master [Freemasonry], one may suggest the behaviour of the British Government in office so far this term has been less than one would expect of a model Government intended to demonstrate attainment in democracy to the world.
As for Mr Oliver Colvile MP, so as to address to avoid criticism being returned in public criticism via a person as opposed to public criticism on behalf of a newspaper, in business a democratic outcome is usually celebrated with drinks. As dessert it is perhaps worth noting I once wrote to Oliver detailing how to avoid cult and occult attack via Freemasonry, Church of Scientology and several other suicide cults shortly before his trip to a military bunker.”

"Lashius..the weapons sold to Saudi Arabia are for self defence, the Saudi leaders are popular with their people,no tax to pay ;their people live well;it is a fundamentalist islamic society and it is what the people want."
How would you know? in the kind of society they have over there if you criticize the ruling system you `disappear` or an example is made of you....hardly gives them the motivation to say anything otherwise does it now?
The fact is the governments of the west harp on and on about bringing democracy to the world and cracking down on these dictatorships.........then the moment one of them turns friendly and pays enough money they actually help them in there deeds! you couldn't make it up if you could you?
Just like how we`re arming Islamic militants in Syria yet fighting them in Mali...hypocrisy is the word with the west!”

“British-Saudi relations are corrupt. We have a £2bn Saudi government arms contract.
Although Cameron went to the Middle East earlier this month, Dave of Arabia isn't too keen on exposing the corruption there and messing things up.
There are bribery allegations about this contract.
The serious fraud office are looking into this, but Colville and two other Tory mates still went on this £6000 visit as part of the 'Uk Defence Forum'.
The forum is a think-tank funded by big arms firms led by lobbyist Robin Ashby who also went and is run by his firm, Bergman PR.
Supposedly a forum about 'understanding the political and security framework as related to the Saudi government' (what a mouthful eh?) it actually operates the smooth flow of arms deals, payments, bribery involving (in a small part) the easy transition of Saudi students into our Uni
All this was reported in the Eye (1334) and is massively suspect.
Sasquatch and Carl, of course you're right with the bribery and student influx, and Lashius, all three of your comments are spot on and what a bunch of hypocrites the Government are.
It does effect us doglover, didn't you for one moment ask why the Saudi Government would want to treat this tory to an all expenses paid trip? A smalltime MP from Plymouth?
You're living in a bubble I'm afraid.”

“If you want a better example of turning a blind eye when it suits just Google "Afghanistan Child Abuse" to learn about the vile practices of those the West supports in that benighted country.Soldiers are advised to turn the other way, keep quiet and don't tell tales when they get home.Worse still British Servicemen are dying to keep creatures like that in power and the British Taxpayer funds them to a large degree. The guy we support was once known as "The Butcher Of Kabul",and not because he managed the local branch of Dewhurst, his brother is reckoned to be the biggest opium dealer in the country, aided by the protection he gets from Western Governments.”
