McLaren was appointed an Honorary Speaker for the charity which supports

visiting seafarers in over 258 ports around the world. As a volunteer

ambassador, Mac will be visiting churches, groups and youth clubs to give talks

about the importance of shipping to the UK and how the Mission supports crews

facing piracy, isolation, loneliness and abandonment.

"Before

retiring, I worked as a marine engineer on many different types of vessels,

from large commercial ships to trawlers and this has given me a deep understanding

and appreciation for the hard work seafarers do," said Mac on his appointment.

"Working at sea is one of the most dangerous occupations in the world and as

someone who has lost a grandfather and three uncles to the deep I am well aware

of the difficulties the 1.3 million seafarers face. The Mission to Seafarers

does wonderful work assisting crews from all over the world and as Honorary

Speaker I am excited to share the importance of their work with as many people

as possible."
