SUMMER is the season to get fit and, although our weather is typically changeable, there are many ways to take advantage of what little sun we do have and tone up outdoors.
1. Skern Lodge in Appledore offers a range of activities for groups, families or individuals to help you get active. These include:
Kayaking: work on your skills both in Skern's heated pool and outdoors in the Torridge estuary. Trips are also run to Westward Ho! for kayak surfing.
Surfing: courses are run on Westward Ho! beach, which is perfect for beginners. It's such good fun, you won't even feel like you're working out.

Climbing: Skern has facilities available for abilities. There is a low level traversing wall to practise climbing skills and a full height climbing wall to stretch and challenge. For the more advanced climber specialist courses offer single pitch climbing on sea cliffs near to Skern. Skern Lodge: 01237 475992.
2. Running: going for a run or a jog is undoubtedly one of the best, cheapest and easiest ways to get fit. It is also an exercise which can be adjusted to any ability.

3. Rock and Rapid based at South Molton offers Coasteering sessions at Baggy Point near Croyde.
Coasteering involves navigating around the coast by climbing the rocks, going through rock pools and swimming. The activity is great for building fitness as it works all areas of the body according to instructor Ollie Hockin. Each session with Rock and Rapid lasts two and half hours and costs £35 per head for groups of six.
