Plymouth man admits escaping from police custody

A MAN has admitted escaping from a police station after being arrested on suspicion of a serious offence.

Craig Goldstone, aged 28, was at large for 13 hours after he left Charles Cross wearing a paper suit.

A previous hearing was told Goldstone was left alone while one officer left the room to fetch a colleague.

Goldstone, of Park Avenue, Devonport, pleaded guilty to escaping from lawful custody from Charles Cross police station on July 7.

The Herald reported at the time that Goldstone left Charles Cross at about 10am that Saturday morning.

Police put out an appeal with a photograph about seven hours later and warned the public not to approach Goldstone.

He was arrested again in a flat in Ford at about 10.30pm that night.

Devon and Cornwall Police launched an inquiry after the escape.

The force had referred the escape to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), but it has been sent back to the force to investigate internally.

A force spokesman said at the time that Goldstone was brought back into custody "as soon as possible" and no harm came to any member of the public while he was at large.

City MPs Alison Seabeck and Oliver Colvile demanded to know how he had escaped and why it was so long before the public was warned.

The force's inquiry is still continuing. Goldstone was remanded in custody for sentence on a date to be fixed in the New Year.
