During a strip search at the police station more cannabis and £720 in cash was found in his pockets. His bulging underpants concealed bags of cocaine valued at £4,820.

Elaine Hobson, for the prosecution, said that when Burke was arrested during the morning of December 29 he told the officers: "I am just a courier, trying to make a few quid".

Christopher Andrews, for the defence, submitted that Burke, who was in poor health, was not at the top of the drugs supply chain.

Judge John Neligan told Burke at last Thursday's hearing that he had taken a risk in agreeing to deliver the drugs to someone for which he was to be paid £150.

The judge said that he had admitted a very serious offence.

He had previous convictions for the possession and supply of ecstasy and heroin several years ago.
