The crash was one of two separate collisions on the motorway - leaving the road closed in both directions.

One person was airlifted to hospital after the first crash on the M5 yesterday which involved a red Volkswagen Transporter van and a silver Vauxhall Tigra on the southbound carriageway near Cullompton, at about 1.35pm.

The van had been travelling on the northbound carriageway when it struck the central reservation, crossing into the opposite carriageway where it was in collision with the other vehicle.

The female driver of the Tigra sustained serious internal injuries and was airlifted to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

The 36-year-old woman, thought to be from London, remains in a serious condition.

The van driver, a 40-year-old woman from Exeter, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital where she was later released following treatment.

The second crash involved four cars and a white Scania HGV on the northbound carriageway at Hele Straight near Cullompton, at about 3.45pm.

Two drivers had to be cut free of their cars in one of the crashes as medical teams carried out emergency treatment at the scene before the injured were taken to hospital.

The white Scania HGV was being driven by a man from Warwickshire.

The crash also involved a black Honda Accord, driven by a 40-year-old man, and registered to Clevedon, Avon. He suffered minor injuries.

A 63-year-old woman from Bristol, who was driving a black Honda Jazz, suffered minor injuries.

A 39-year-old woman from Burnham-on Sea, who was drving a black Vauxhall Astra, also suffered minor injuries.

Motorists were caught up in long tailbacks and diversions after the emergency services closed the M5 in both directions between junction 28 at Cullompton and junction 29 near Exeter for several hours.

Drivers were urged to avoid the area or delay travel if possible, Devon and Cornwall Police said.
