Mr Mears escaped without serious injury because a friend helped him restrain the drug-fuelled intruder, Exeter Crown Court was told.
Carter, of Ladysmith Road, Exeter, admitted affray and was jailed for 16 months by Recorder Mr Paul Derbyshire.

Emily Pitts, prosecuting, said Mr Mears had been at a party at Carter's then home in Crediton the previous night and had unwittingly gone into a room where his girlfriend was asleep and tried to get into bed with her.
He got out and apologised as soon as he realised, but the girlfriend told Carter what he had done and he became angry. After taking cocaine and valium, he went to Mr Mears' flat off Alexandra Road .
Piers Norsworthy, defending, said Carter was trying to turn his life and had enrolled with a drugs project.
