AN elderly man was rescued from Brixham harbour this afternoon after he and his mobility scooter fell into the water.

The alarm was raised at 1pm, and Berry Head Coastguard, an ambulance crew, Torbay RNLI Boarding Boat and the Coastguard East Devon Sector Manager responded.

The 73-year-old man was helped out of the water by members of the public. A local mussel farm boat recovered the scooter.

The man was taken home by ambulance staff.

“It's more children of the 18 -30 bracket that have a problem with the lack of barriers or fences around harbours. The under 7's haven't learned to be that stupid yet.”

“If you're a parent who doesn't keep a hold on your kid next to a harbour then a barrier won't help, the kid has much bigger problems.”

“So SmartyC, im guessing you are not a parent yourself with that kinda attitude.. If your are indeed a parent then you would have a different attitude as kids do wonder off in a split second!”

“So, Chunder123, you feel it's the council's responsibility to ensure a toddler doesn't fall in rather than it's parents?

Not a fan of personal responsibility then..?”

“they really should have safety barriers up. anybody of any age could fall in. areas of the harbour wall only have a chain link across high parts and a todler could walk underneath. Its about time our council put safety barriers all the way across”
