A 36-YEAR-OLD hotel handyman, from Romania, has been remanded in custody after being charged with committing three counts of rape in Ilfracombe.

Nelu Popa, of 43 St Brannocks Road, Ilfracombe, allegedly raped a woman in an Ilfracombe hotel in April.

A police investigation has been on going since the allegations were made leading to Popa being charged on Thursday and remanded in custody. The defendant appeared before North Devon Magistrates' Court on Friday where the case was committed to Exeter Crown Court for trial. No plea was taken.

All three counts are alleged to have occurred on April 9 and to the same woman.
