The scene has now been cordoned off and a security firm has been hired to guard the area.
A post-mortem examination was due to be carried out today.
Officers said the man’s next of kin had been informed of his death but that he had not yet been formally identified.
A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said they believed the man may also have been assaulted some days before his death.
The man, who was arrested yesterday, was held in custody last night at Charles Cross police station on suspicion of murder and today released on police bail pending further enquiries.
