Olympic medal winners to have gold postboxes in Plymouth
OLYMPIC heroes will be honoured with their very own postboxes to celebrate the medals they bought home to Plymouth.
Plymouth Argyle FC honoured Ruta Meilutyte, who sensationally won the women's 100m breaststroke gold for Lithuania at the age of 15, and Tom Daley, who won bronze for the men's individual 10m platform diving event, by purchasing two scrapped post boxes which they will refurbish to be used for fan mail.

Now they've arrived and will be painted gold – for Ruta, and bronze – for Tom.
Plymouth Argyle owner, James Brent, made the move after Ruta was denied her own postbox because she's originally from Lithuania. Royal Mail had honoured all gold winners a gold-painted box.

Tom Daley said: "It's not every day someone tells you you're getting your own postbox. It's a lovely gesture and Ruta fully deserved her own. It's great to think Plymouth is thinking of bronze medallists too."

“I bet Tom Daley will love it .... everytime he goes to home park he will be reminded he came third . And this is not knocking him for his acheivements which are well done indeed ... but more to say of the mindset of those morons who dont think properly and get overhyped .
Its all got very stupid . A foriegn girl who lives in Plymouth and a Plymouth lad who came third . For godsakes ... grow up !!!!!!!”

“by marc1964......last comment from me on this fairly innocuous story. I thought that "two scrapped post boxes " were purchased (presumably from a scrappy) and are being painted by the new owner and placed on private property. Does that mean that if I buy, lets say an old phone box, and put it in my garden, I have to ask the permission of BT, or my local council to paint it flowery, or whatever colour, and put plants in it? Don't think so. So it is a cheap shot at PCC (normally deserved). Of course it is a publicity stunt from James Brent (nice comment ,by ChezGuevara!!) but what harm is it doing, and why the criticism?”

“The same as all others think . Even the athletes must be embarrased by being called a hero . Why do the media continue with this rubbish ? They continualy give us stuff as if its a comic we are reading and we are children. No wonder sales of the Herald and others are down . PC and childish and full of mistakes and nothing in depth .
We were told that under new management things would change . To tell you the truth .... things have got worse.”

“swanseajock
All post boxes are the perview of Royal Mail and to change it from fire engine red or Yellow requires the councils permision irrespective of who is paying for it. And to paint one in honour of a forign athlete is a disrespectfull to all GB athletes who took part no mater if they won or not.”

“I would like to say 2 things:
by marc1964.........Did you actually read the article? The boxes have been bought by the owner of Argyle, and wuill be placed at the ground for "fan Mail" Nothing to do with PCC or anyone else, just a tribute to 2 athletes from the city.
And to anyone else regarding heroes. Why shouldn't peoplelook up to athletes and treat them as heroes. Everyone knows how brave the military are, but it is ridiculous to compare them just to denegrate the athletes. They are heroes to whoever wants to treat them as such. My dad was my hero, but he was never in the military. Does that make him any less so?”

“For anyone who has forgotten Tom came THIRD and got a bronze medal. Perhaps we are to assume that he is the answer to the second coming. Personally I do not think so myself!”

“This is soo wrong. The gold boxes were for people who got gold , no other county is devaluaing this by doing one for a GB Athlete who got a bronze and two for a forign athlete. This is just cluthching at straws PCC and making Plymouth look stupid to boot.
We nearly went a whole week without a Tom Daley story , must do better herald try for a month next time.”

“the term hero implys someone who has performed a heroic act, either in the line of duty or otherwise....to apply it to every single service man and woman who heads over to afghan simply doing the job they signed on to do is actully very demeaning to those who have truley earnt the right to be reffered to with such a term.
As for athletes like tom dailey etc? yes theyre good at what they do but calling them heroes is absolutly stupid.”

“Argyle can't get very much fan mail if all Brent bought was two small post boxes. My guess is they will be emptied once a year.”

“Devonview, you beat me to it.
Im so sick and tired of the word "hero" being applied to every single person serving in Afghan or wherever. Just seems like propaganda to make it more acceptable to keep sending these people over to these places. It seems that its only in the last 2/3 years that the word "hero" has been used this way.”
