Megan, 13, rescues pup from freezing-cold Plymouth river
A THIRTEEN-YEAR-OLD schoolgirl played the role of rescuer when she plucked a stricken pup to safety.
Megan Sidney waded into the River Plym in Plymbridge woods to hoist out the unfortunate canine.
It was the second dog rescue of the weekend. Yesterday The Herald reported how two mystery men dived into the River Plym to save 11-month-old German Shepherd Polo, belonging to 73-year-old dog breeder Avril Bond.
Megan, from Glenholt, said: "The dog's ball was going downstream and it jumped in after it. He managed to swim to an island in the middle of the river but when he tried to swim back he kept getting washed further away.

"That's when I went into the water. I tried to grab him but he went past me at first. He kept paddling though and swam back so I was able to grab him by his back and collar and pull him out."
The dog's mystery owner was grateful to get her pet back in one piece.
Plymouth High School for Girls student Megan said: "The owner was so happy and she wouldn't stop hugging me when I stepped onto the bank. She thanked me for saving him."
Megan had been out walking her family friend's Border Collie called Caffie in Plymbridge Woods on Saturday at around 3pm along with her brother Tyler, 11 when the incident happened.
"I was very pleased with myself for going in as I had never done anything like that before," Megan added.
WAS it your dog plucked out of the river by young Megan? Or were you one of the mystery men who rescued pup Polo?

“Well said countrygirly.
Well done Megan :)
It always amazes me that people will jump into the sea or rivers to rescue a dog, most of the time the rescuers die and the dog survives,is it worth sacrificing your life for. I had a dog for 14 yrs and as much as I loved him I wouldn't have put my own life at risk to save him”

“Mixed emotions.... Well done for what you have done. No doubt your parents are very proud but... the Plym is a dangerous river. Swollen by rain, this is a dangerous environment for anyone, let alone a young girl. This could have ended in tragedy and then the posts would be.. why did anyone let a young girl cross this river to rescue a dog? Well done and a pat on the back but dont ever do it again!! “Well done Megan and also the other rescuers. It's a pity there's not more people like you around ie someone who will actually do something to help instead of walking on by.”
