TORBAY-BASED homebuilder Cavanna Homes has announced the appointment of Mike Bennett as commercial and technical director.

He becomes only the second non-family member to join the board of directors since the company was founded 90 years ago.

Mr Bennett (pictured), 59, joined Cavanna Homes in 2004 as commercial manager having previously worked for Kier Weston, Midas Homes and Staverton Construction.

Originally from Torquay, Mike Bennett attended Torquay Boys' Grammar School and is a keen supporter of Torquay United and a member of the Torbay Police Choir.

Commenting on his new role, Mr Bennett said: "It is a privilege to be appointed to the board of a successful, local family business and I look forward to helping take the business from strength to strength in its 90th year and beyond."

Mr Bennett's appointment is the latest in a phased succession plan which has seen non-family members take over the day to day running of the company for the first time since it was established in 1923 by the late Philip Cavanna.

Last year Eugene Rapson was appointed managing director and third generation family members Jeremy Cavanna, his brother Jonathan and their cousin Martin Cavanna moved to executive roles within the company.

Earlier this month, Cavanna Homes reported trading figures showing 2012 was its busiest ever year, with a turnover of £30.2million from a record number of new homes sold in its developments across Devon and Cornwall.
