"Where possible, staff have been relocated to our nearby stores in Exeter and the Accessorize store in Plymouth."

Phil Chapman, centre director of Union Square, said: "Had the lease not expired I think they would have remained in Torquay as they have traded quite well over the last 15 years.

"The closure in Torquay is down to current economics and a review of their retail strategy. we are caught out by the timing of the expiry, usually at this point they would modernise or refit the shop having extended the lease term.

"Closing the shop is the easiest option at this point in time, my view is that they should not take a short term view as the town is to improve over the next few years."

It is understood four staff are affected.

“Of course shops such as monsoon and watrestones are leaving Torquay. They serve the educated middle class, in Torquay you only have the uneducated unemployed class now.”
