Morrisons has already said it would welcome applications from former Blockbuster staff.

The supermarket chain has bought 49 Blockbuster stores across the country. Blockbuster is in administration and is looking for buyers for remaining stores, including Newton Abbot, which is still open and trading as usual.

Richard Randle-Jones, centre director of Union Square shops complex, said: "It is hoped Morrisons will drive footfall into the town. It could be quite a good boost for the town, only time will tell."

“Don't get me wrong - the competition is welcome but it isn't going to bring large numbers of people currently driving out to the Willows and beyond back into Torquay town centre to do their grocery shopping. That is the main reason the supermarket development behind the town hall at Castle Circus has been proposed - loads of parking, big store low prices, big store choice and people spilling out to neighbouring retail stores in the town centre just as they do in Totnes (Morrisons) and Newton Abbot (Asda).
The small Metro/Express outlets are fine for convenience but it is fact that you pay over the odds if you shop at them. As I said, let's hope the move by Morrisons to Torquay is just a stepping stone to bigger things to come.”

“Tesco metro manage perfectly fine on fleet street in Torquay with little to no parking so I'm sure Morrisons will do just as well due to parking available on market street and a multi storey car park near by.”

“Hardly the answer to Torquay' town centre's lack of a large supermarket offering low prices. Location is rubbish too with little parking nearby. Let's just hope this is a stepping stone to bigger things to come. Think this could soon be known as Blocktesco. Mmmmm...”
