IT'S a cold November evening and nearing the run-up to Christmas, which means only one thing to any respecting rocker or metal head in the SouthWest: the mighty Motörhead are making their almost yearly visit to Plymouth's premier live music venue, The Pavilions.

First up, British punk veterans UK Subs battled technical difficulties including a broken snare skin but still managed to roll out the classics with as much passion and energy as they did 30 years ago. Next, The Anti-Nowhere League raged their way through a set of angry punk, full of attitude with fan favourites So What and I Hate People kicking up the first mosh pit action of the night.

Following the news last week that Motörhead might have to cancel after the normally indestructible Lemmy (pictured) injured his finger, it was a relief that the show was going ahead. This seemed to increase the expectancy in the crowd as Motörhead entered to the sound of air raid sirens and launched into Bomber. The crowd erupted.

As is usual with Motörhead on an album tour, they took new songs from new release The World Is Yours and blended them seamlessly with solid rock anthems such as Killed By Death and Iron Fist.

The set choice coupled with a few novel Motörhead moments such as a killer drum solo from "the best drummer in the world", Mikkey Dee, and a guitar solo from Phil Campbell, made this a gig to remember.

With a final encore of three of the best songs ever written by a rock band (Whore House Blues, Ace Of Spades and Overkill) Motörhead departed from the stage leaving the crowd in awe of an outfit who can still kick out one of the best live performances in the business and who show no sign of stopping any time soon.

The truth is, they are Motörhead and they play rock'n'roll.

Oh, and they just happen to be very, very good at it.
