Yesterday Mrs Justice Cox, sitting at London's High Court, approved a lump-sum payment of £1,825,000 to settle Mr Hennessy's claim.

Andrew Granville Stafford, his barrister, told the court he had suffered a "very serious accident" that had left him with ongoing disabilities. The car had turned right from a major road onto a minor one, "without any or proper regard for oncoming traffic", he added.

Mrs Justice Cox, approving the payout, said: "I am delighted to say that this settlement is wholly proper and is very much in Mr Hennessy's best interests."
