Negotiator called after man climbs on to wrong side of Plymouth bridge

A major road in Plymouth was closed after a man climbed onto the wrong side of a bridge.

Pennycomequick Hill in Pennycomequick was shut at 4:20pm yesterday in what police described as a "negotiation incident."

A male in his 40s was reportedly sat on the wrong side of the railway bridge on Pennycomequick Hill.

The incident forced the closure of the area and police said a negotiator was called to bring the man down peacefully.

A police spokesman said: "We realise it is not the best time to close the road with rush-hour in full swing but we must ensure the safe removal of the male."

Traffic along the A386 Saltash Road was stationary with long delays in both directions between Pennycomequick Hill roundabout and Northcross roundabout.

A diversion was set up with outbound traffic instructed to go up Saltash Road and directed off onto North Road West.

Inbound traffic used alternative routes from Pennycomequick Hill Roundabout.

Pedestrians were still being allowed to pass under the bridge.
