New 10k cycle route would link key sites
A £600,000 new cycle trail could link up key sites across Torbay and help boost tourism in the resort.
Plans for a new 10 kilometre cycle route in the Bay are being put together and are now moving forward.

Conservation charity Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust is working with other partners to secure £600,000 in Government funding to create new routes in and around Cockington.
The trail will connect key sites including Occombe Farm, Cockington Court, Torre Abbey, Parkfield and Goodrington through a network of off-road paths.

Plans include creating a new cycling hub in Cockington village with a cycle hire outlet so that tourists and locals can hire bikes and explore the English Riviera Geopark on two wheels.
Julian Carnell, fundraising and community manager for Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust, said: "Providing new cycling opportunities in Torbay for local residents and visitors has wide ranging benefits in terms of health, wellbeing, tourism and economic regeneration.
"There is tremendous interest in cycling at the moment following the success of the cycling team at the Olympics and we aim to build on this momentum with the Geopark Cycle Trail project and other initiatives across the Bay."
The project is part of a wider vision for cycling in the Bay which is being formulated by the Cycling Forum and includes the ambition to connect Torquay, Paignton and Brixham harbours via a coastal route in the future.

“I hate cycling on the pavement. A dedicated cycleway between Brixham and Torquay would be great. It's great that we are expanding our tourism offer beyond the beach but like the comments below lets also have some focus on getting locals on bikes.”

“As a cyclist I do like your comment ziderman.
Decent cycle lanes ( not just stripes of paint on busy roads) will encourage all cyclists.
No-one wants conflict with pedestrians. Some cyclists are ignorant, but most only take to the pavement for short distances when road conditions are just too dangerous.
And Ant_ you are absolutely right as well.
Are we having an outbreak of cyclist/pedestrian harmony here on thisissouthdevon?”

“What is needed is improvements for cycling on commuting routes to encourage more people onto bikes on a regular basis which will have far better benefit to the local community than a nice scenic cycle track going nowhere in particular for occasional tourists.”
