ILFRACOMBE GP Dr John Womersley is stepping down as trustee and chairman of the board at North Devon Hospice.

He has been a trustee since 2004 and chairman since 2008.

He said it had been an honour and privilege to serve the charity, adding: "I have found it very worthwhile and fulfilling and I personally gained a lot from being involved with such a professional and compassionate board of trustees."

He described their role as one of working with the senior management team and chief executive to oversee the everyday running of the organisation.

The trustees also had to think strategically to secure the future direction of the organisation and the provision of end-of-life care.

Dr Womersley, who is a GP and senior partner at the Warwick Practice in Ilfracombe, wanted to thank the people of North Devon for their support.

He will be succeeded as chairman by Angela Webb who is urging more people to get involved.

A special open evening will be held at the hospice on Friday, July 29 at 7.30pm to encourage new trustees to come forward.

Angela said: "It is an absolute privilege to be on the board of trustees for North Devon Hospice, as it allows me to serve my community by helping such a vital local charity.

"Not all people fully understand the role of a trustee, but at the hospice, we take decisions on the strategic future of the charity.

"We have a wonderful chief executive, supported by amazing staff and volunteers; they make sure that all the day-to-day work is taken care of, and that we are providing top quality care to local patients and families.

"So the trustees make sure that the hospice is heading in the right direction and is sustainable in the future.

"It is a very fulfilling role, which gives a great deal of satisfaction."

Angela said that new faces on the board were essential to gain fresh perspectives on the challenges ahead.

"Trustees serve for a three-year term, which can often be extended if necessary," she said.

"But bringing in new faces also brings in important new ideas and impetus.

"We would love to hear from anyone who would like to know more about it."
