New memorial to fallen servicemen in Northernhay Gardens

A new memorial to those servicemen from Exeter who have died during active service since the Second World War is to be unveiled in Northernhay Gardens.

The unveiling, which will take place on Monday 10 September, will be carried out by the Lord Mayor of Exeter, Cllr Rob Newby, and the Commander Joint Forces Command, Air Chief Marshall Sir Stuart Peach KCB, CBE, FRAeS.

The memorial will include the inscription of the Remembrance Exhortation and a tablet with the names of the 10 Exeter servicemen who have lost their lives in conflicts overseas, including those in Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan. It has been designed in consultation with the family of one of the servicemen named on the memorial and placed in the redesigned garden area just inside the Queen Street entrance to Northernhay Gardens.

The memorial will form a discrete and lasting memory for family and friends of those who have lost a relative, and will complement the War Memorial in Northernhay Gardens, which was designed by local artist John Angel and unveiled in 1923. The City's annual Remembrance Day service will continue to be held at the Northernhay Gardens memorial.

As well as the Lord Mayor and the Commander Joint Forces Command, other local civic and military dignitaries will be in attendance. These include the Vice Lord Lieutenant of Devon, the Bishop of Exeter, the Vice Chancellor of Exeter University and representatives from the battalions and regiments in which the fallen servicemen had served.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach, who is in day-to-day command of all British servicemen on active service across the globe, said: "On behalf of the Sailors, Marines, Soldiers and Airmen who have been lost or wounded, have served and continue to serve in the UK and overseas, I give my regards to the people of the city of Exeter for this permanent recognition to the memory of our fallen comrades. This serves to highlight the lasting bond between members of the United Kingdom Armed Forces and the city and people of Exeter."

The Lord Mayor, Cllr Rob Newby, said: "As a city, we already honour our dead from the two Great Wars, and it is fitting that we honour those who have fallen since 1945. This memorial allows us to do just that."
