New sweet shop with an old fashioned twist

Ringing a bell and waiting for a cottage window to open is not the first thing associated with going to a sweet shop.

But people wanting to satisfy their sweet tooth in a North Devon village are doing just that after a new sweet shop opened with an old fashioned twist.

The Sweet Window in Buckland Brewer has been inundated with customers since opening last month.

The owner Laura Odell, 30, was inspired to open the shop after reading a book about the history of the village.

She learnt much of the trade was done from people's houses, and often through their windows.

The mum of two said: "I thought it was just such a good idea and it fits in perfectly with my schedule as a busy working mum."

The shop opens most days when Laura is free and she lets people know exactly when via the shop's Facebook page and on a chalk board outside the cottage.

People then arrive at the door of Taw Cottage and ring the bell.

Laura comes to the window and people are free to choose from the array of sweets and chocolates spread on a shelf.

Laura said: "People can just reach around and choose. Some of the smaller ones get up on the windowsill so they can see better.

"I think one of the pubs used to sell sweets out their window so it gave me the idea.

"It just made sense as we have such a central location in the village.

"It has gone down well with everyone so far. I have one eight-month-old girl who loves the chocolate stars and then there are the older people in the village who like to come and get their sherbet lemons and toffees.

The shop offers a range of sweets, from traditional pear drops, bon bons to cola bottles, gumballs, dipdabs and tongue painter lollies that make your tongue change colour.

Laura said: "We are lucky enough to live in the same village as confectioner Fancy Something Sweet, who has been working incredibly hard over the past month to create an array of Belgian chocolate buttons, bars, lollies and, most recently, gorgeous fudge bars and pieces for us."
