THE CONSTRUCTION of a model of Admiral Nelson's ship HMS Victory has been turning heads at a Torquay newsagents.

The massive construction project to build the model is being undertaken by Nick Hannaford, who runs Downs Newsagency in Babbacombe Road with his partner Trish Cossey.

Nick has been painstakingly building the model from scratch at the newsagents over the past three years and regular customers have been watching its progress.

So far, the dedicated modeller has spent three years on the challenge and aims to carry on until she is complete.

The parts have come from 120 issues of a weekly magazine that was on sale.

Nick explained: "I saw it advertised on the television and thought I would have a go at it.

"It is the first one I have done and never realised how involved it would be.

"It did look quite straight forward but got harder and harder as I have had to make every tiny detail. I wouldn't like to count up how many hours I have spent on it.

"Sometime I spend all day on it and it doesn't look like I've done anything."

The magnificent model has so far cost about £800 in magazines and materials such as paint and craft knives.

Nick reckons he still has about 12 to 18 months work left on the ship, which includes doing the rigging.

"I hope I don't get tied up in knots, he laughed. "It looks a nightmare to do."

But Nick has enjoyed the challenge so much, he has got another model lined-up to make, once this one is finished.

He has all the parts ready to go for a scale model of Captain Cook's Endeavour.
