North Devon man in prison after attacks on his pregnant girlfriend

A DRUNKEN boyfriend has been jailed for breaking his partner's nose when he attacked her in the bath.

Benjamin Mennell-Flisher, 18, was abusing alcohol and drugs when he carried out two different attacks on girlfriend Lois Diamond.

The second attack happened when she was seven weeks pregnant and still recovering from the broken nose she suffered in the first assault.

Mennell-Flisher, who comes from North Devon but was living at Shauls Court, Exeter, admitted two offences of causing actual bodily harm and one of criminal damage.

He was jailed for a total of 16 months by Judge Barry Cotter, QC, at Exeter Crown Court.

He also made a restraining order banning him from contacting the victim.

The judge told him: "These two assaults were on the same partner.

"In the first she was in the bath and clearly upset and distressed.

"You leant across and punched her so hard that it not only broke her nose but displaced it.

"You assaulted her again when she was seven months pregnant. There was a sustained attack on her on that day.

"The aggravating features of this case are obvious.

"She was to a degree vulnerable and you were in a relationship and the blow which broke her nose was a savage one, delivered while in the bath.

"There was an element of pre meditation because she had been threatening to hurt herself and you told her that you would show her how."

Nigel Wraith, prosecuting, said the victim needed surgery to re-set her nose.

Greg Richardson, defending, said his client had started abusing alcohol and drugs as a result of mixing with older men who had a criminal lifestyle.

He said he was under the influence of drink when he carried out the offences but has attended two alcohol awareness courses while on remand awaiting sentence.
