Olympic 10k is target for Jo
JO Pavey will race over 5,000m this weekend at the British trials – but hopes to get the nod to run the 10,000m at the Olympics.
The Tiverton-based athlete has set qualifying times to compete at the London Games over both distances already this season.
While she is targeting the longer event, she will run over the 5,000m at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium on Sunday in order to keep her fresh for the European Championships in Helsinki, Finland, when she will compete over 10,000m the following Sunday, July 1 having been named in the provisional squad yesterday (Monday).
"The main reason I'm doing the 5,000 (at the trials) is because the 10,000 is not classed as an official trial because they realise you cannot keep running them," said Pavey. "To save my legs a bit it's going to be more sensible for me to do the 5k, particularly as I'm running the 10,000 at the European Championships the following week. It wouldn't be suitable to do a 10,000 just before that.

"It's always nice to turn up at the trials and to be selected you do need to do an event at the trials.
"Even if you are not doing your preferred event you need to show some form and you always want to be there anyway because it's an important event.
"I'm not sure what will happen with the 5,000 (for the Olympics), we'll see what happens after the trial, because my main priority is to try to gain Olympic selection for the 10.
"To be honest, I'll be thrilled to be selected for anything."
Pavey is planning to do one more race after the Europeans before going to the Olympics, but that would be a shorter distance to further sharpen her up for the competition in London next month.
She thinks running the 10,000m at the continental championships will be good preparation for the 2012 Games as she has not raced on the track for the last couple of years, while her attention was on running marathons.
"I am focused on the Olympics but I think if I can do another 10,000 that would be helpful," said Pavey, who won a 5,000m Commonwealth silver medal in 2006 in Melbourne, Australia.
"I haven't done track running for a couple of years and to do another 10,000 – providing I haven't got any niggles – would be a good practice for the Olympics.
"It is quite a different thing to run 25 laps in spikes. You can get away with niggles in the 1,500 but you can do a lot of damage in 25 laps."
Some members of the Great Britain athletics squad for the Olympics are expected to be announced shortly after the trials this weekend.
