A gritter has overturned on the B3227 near South Molton this morning.
The Devon County Council highways department owned vehicle came off the road at around 5am this morning.
The gritter veered through a hedge and dropped onto its side in a field below the road.
Firefighters from South Molton and Bampton rushed to the scene, where they called for assistance from the heavy rescue unit based at Middlemoor Fire Station in Exeter.

The driver of the gritter, which was on its side, suffered only minor lacerations and had been able to leave the vehicle.
Firefighters were able to use a ladder to get to the vehicle and make it safe but it remains in place as it will have to be lifted from the field by a crane.
The road is likely to be closed for a short period later today to allow the gritter to be recovered.
The driver is not the first to have lost control of his gritter in tricky conditions. In January a gritter became stuck in a ditch during heavy snow and in December 2010 a gritter driver lost control near Arlington and spent two weeks in hospital with a broken leg and foot.
