A SPEAKING competition in Barnstaple took an unexpected twist when a national sports hero took to the stage.
Tom Daley, British diving champion, took part in a foreign language speaking competition at Pilton Community College on Friday.

Pupils were astounded when the Olympic Bronze medalist arrived at the school, in a visit which was kept under wraps to the majority of staff and pupils.
The teenager, who was representing Plymouth College, gave a three minute speech in Spanish about his diving career.

He said his speech touched upon his goals for the future and television series Splash: “I spoke in Spanish about my dreams to win a gold Olympic medal and how I want to qualify for Rio in 2016.
“I also spoke about how my family have supported me and Splash. I want to be a television presenter once I have finished diving.
“Languages are very important. I travel a lot. When I go to Mexico I do all my interviews in Spanish, it is very handy.”
He scooped top prize in the Key Stage 5 non-native speaking category, and shared his excitement on Twitter.
Shortly after the competition he posted a photograph of himself holding a cup and a certificate with the following message: "I won my Spanish southwest speaking competition!! Next step is the southern finals! :D"
John Davies, language director at Pilton Community College said: “Tom has done more to boost languages at the school that I could do in years of teaching.
“We are over the moon, his presence has been fantastic.”
