GRANDMOTHER Sandra Mitchell had the shock of her life when a car came crashing into her Paignton home.

Sandra, 62, was working on her computer in the lounge of her ground floor flat in Ramshill Road when the Jaguar smashed into her property.

It careered into the wall of her bedroom, knocking out some of the brickwork and sending debris all over the bed.

"I dread to think what could have happened," said Sandra, who has five grand-children.

Her lounge is just five feet from where the car crashed into her flat — but it could have been worse.

Sandra revealed she has been suffering from bronchitis since Christmas and was lucky she had not been resting in her bedroom at the time of impact. She said: "It was really scary. I just thought someone was really hurt and I ran outside to see if I could help but I couldn't so I called 999.

"I'm still in shock. I didn't know what was going on. I couldn't stop shaking yesterday. I keep thinking what if my grandchildren had been outside playing?"

She thanked neighbours who offered her cups of tea.

The property is owned by Sanctuary Housing and she is now waiting to hear what will happen next.

She has been told the property is structurally sound, but will not be able to use the bedroom.

The Jaguar was being driven along Ramshill Road in the Foxhole area when it was in collision with another car travelling in the opposite direction.

It then careered through a fence into the garden and came to rest with its nose touching the front of Sandra's ground floor flat in the two-storey property.

The second car, a Vauxhall Corsa, was spun around and collided with a parked van.

The incident happened shortly after noon on Tuesday.

Sandra's daughter, Kerry, who lives nearby, said: "My boyfriend's brother was in the van which was hit."

Part of Ramshill Road was closed while emergency services attended the scene and the damaged vehicles were taken away.

By 2pm the recovery unit was winching away the green S-type Jaguar from the garden.

A spokesman for Sanctuary Housing said a structural engineer would assess the damage to the house on Wednesday morning.

A 22-year-old local man was arrested by police on suspicion of driving while disqualified. He has been released on bail pending further inquiries.
