Gales scuppered the official switch-on party for Plymouth’s Christmas lights last week - but the festive illuminations are still proving a big hit.
Torrential downpours over the weekend have prevented many from enjoying the spectacular light show so far. But with an improvement in the weather shoppers are now able to get into the festive spirit and make the most of the twinkling Christmas extravaganza lighting up the city centre.

The illuminations are a key part of Plymouth’s push to create a vibrant retail environment for consumers and business people - so The Herald decided to make sure people don’t miss out ahead of a rescheduled official celebration.
Both the City Centre Company and Plymouth City Council plan to reschedule the stage entertainment for a date closer to Christmas and talks are under way to set a date.
But the consensus among shoppers is this year’s lights are already a real treat.
Yolanda Garbutt-Keal said: “I think the Christmas lights are beautiful as usual. The layout is well balanced through Armada Way and the city centre, it does bring good cheer.
“I think it’s lovely walking through town and seeing all the window displays at the moment as well. There’s a great atmosphere with the ice rink and the Christmas market.”
Pearl Sandercock, from Honicknowle, agrees. She’s already looking forward to getting her Christmas shopping under way. She said: “The Christmas lights are always nice. I’m coming in with my daughter on Thursday to do my Christmas shopping and see them properly.”
Ben Groom added: “The lights look brilliant, I think they’re much better than other places.”
Laura Harrison, from Woolwell, has already done most of her Christmas shopping but has enjoyed the festive cheer in the city centre.
“The lights look great and it’s brilliant there’s the ice rink and the Christmas market, it’s really got me in the spirit.”
