PAIGNTON bus station will close on Monday for renovation works scheduled to take three months.

Stagecoach South West said the closure is required in order to carry out essential renovation works to the roof canopy.

Most nearby businesses have also welcomed the investment, details of which have not been revealed by Stagecoach.

Matthew Clarke, owner of The Torbay Bookshop and chairman of Paignton Business Improvement District, said: "Any investment in the town is very good news.

"The most exciting thing is where the temporary bus stops are going to be, which will, hopefully, bring some needed footfall into Hyde Road and Torquay Road.

"Hopefully, people will see shops they didn't know existed, and it will lead to an increase in trade."

Alex Walters, assistant manager of Costcutter in Gerston Road, said the renovation was good for everybody in the long run.

"It's win-win," he said. "I don't think the bus station closure will affect us greatly. We will still get our regular trade. This is a holiday resort and we're in a good spot."

Simon Aske, manager at Colin Lewis Cycles in Dartmouth Road, said the renovation work was good news.

He said: "Hopefully, the renovation will leave the bus station and the area looking smarter.

"It's quite a rough area, and smarter areas don't attract as much theft and drug usage, which there's quite a bit of here.

"We won't have the noisy buses going past our door so we're happy the closure will last for three months."

However, Brett Tout, a chef at Jade's Coffee House in Gerston Road, said: "I think it will be a nightmare. The buses will take up most of Hyde Road and there will be a lot of traffic disruption.

"We get a lot of people from the bus station coming in just to use our toilets so it would be good to see Stagecoach investing in toilets for their customers."

Michelle Hargreaves, managing director of Stagecoach South West, said: "I hope, as a result, passengers will experience the minimum of disruption and I look forward to welcoming them to a newly renovated bus station in time for the start of the summer season."

During the closure, all bus services will arrive and depart from Hyde Road, Great Western Road, and Torquay Road, until May 24.

The Paignton Travelshop will remain open for business.

“if you use a decibel meter you will find those air horns thosee buses are using in the bus station are exceeding legal limits. ALso i have noticed they are actually dangerous as they distract you from being able to tihnk they are too loud. The idea of a reverse alert is to alert sombody that a bus is reversing. those horns are dangerous and could damage peoples hearing and frighten old ladies e.t.c ive noticed some of those drivers act like boobs and they wait for one driver to sound the horn as a distraction just before he sounds the really loud reverse warning horn. it seems like they are doing it to be purphously unpleasant. THe are lots of people with babies and babies delicate eardrums could be damaged by those loud horns. PRoof out environmental health services are useless as they allow such high decibels which can damage babies and peoples hearing.”
