CAR parking prices in Teignbridge could rise by five per cent next year to add £100,000 to council coffers.

The budget also proposes giving staff at Teignbridge Council a one per cent pay increase, or a £250 one-off payment for lower-paid staff.

Brian Watson, chairman of Newton Abbot Chamber of Trade, said: "We understand the council is in a difficult position and we're saddened by any proposed price hike.

"As a businessman I can see the council is restricted where it can get its revenue from and I'm sure it has looked at all the options and there can't be an alternative.

"It is a worry that people won't come into town though if it's more expensive to park. Perhaps they could introduce free parking after 4pm to encourage families picking their children up from school to come into the town centre."
