Passmore and Richards take honours as Paignton bag awards
Paignton Sea Anglers' Association enjoyed much success in 2011 and qualified for many Wyvern Division trophies and a remarkable 113 Specimen Fish Certificates, but, due to a clash of dates with its own presentation evening, some members could not attend the organisation's Exeter prize-giving event.
Peter Passmore took the Bill Bradford Trophy for the best specimen bass a superb fish of 14lb 6oz 3 drams caught at a wreck off Start Point from his own boat, while fishing further out in Lyme Bay provided the organisation's biggest black bream of 5lb 9oz 12 drams for Gordon Richards, who represented Paignton at the Wyvern Presentation at Exeter.
Paignton's award for the best fish by a lady went to Fran Dack for a golden grey mullet of 2lb 6oz 1 dram, and the top junior was Chris Doidge, who had a cod of 23lb 13oz 4 drams.
Shore fishing ace Andy Copping won 13 specimen fish certificates among his captures. Other catches of note-winning major trophies were: Ling (33-6-6) by Ray Nathan; Flounder (3-2-1) by Matt Skelly; Bull Huss (16-12-5) by W Butler; Pollack (21-12-8) by R Nathan; Mullet (5-0-10) by Nick Berry.
A total of 82 trophies for sea catches were presented by Tim Churchward, the chairman of the Torbay Angling Festival.
Although the flounder season is virtually at an end. the Plymouth Federation's final match was fished by an entry of 46 senior and three juniors.
Rodbenders member Mark Ancil chose to fish the Cofflete Creek area of the River Yealm and the inlet produced a winning fish of 2lb 9oz which gained him a handful of tens and fivers for a total of £120.
Steve Avery of Roving Rods, who fished Tosnos in the Kingsbridge estuary, took the second best fish of 2lb 6oz and a £70 pay-out. The third-placed flattie of 2lb 4oz fell to unattached Steve Bromilow, who collected £40. The junior prize of a reel and tackle voucher went to nine-year-old Lauren Ancil for a fish of 1lb 10oz.
The South Hams area of Devon has many attractions, and for dedicated coarse anglers all roads lead to the Emperor Lakes complex at Loddiswell, where some of the biggest fish in the Westcountry are resident. Although this is the accepted quiet period of the year, superb catches continue to be made at the venue's season and day-ticket waters.
Fishing the former, Dave Pierce banked a mirror carp of 32lb 14oz and Nigel Edgecombe encountered a 24lb 10oz fish. Common carp provided Dave Lande with a superb double of a personal-best 34lb 10oz and a 32lb 1oz specimen.
The day-ticket lake produced a catfish of 44lb 8oz taken by Dave Wood, who also had a mirror of just over 18lb.
Emperor is one of the few fisheries holding sturgeon, and the latest capture was a fish of 35lb 8oz taken by Pete Elbourne. Emperor has appointed Cornwall Baits as its main supplier, and is also in the process of developing a range of in-house boilies.
